Work Your Salvation - 5th in Philippians Series

Philippians 2:12-18 (NKJV):
“Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure. Do all things without complaining and disputing, that you may become blameless and harmless children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, holding fast to the word of life, so that I may rejoice in the day of Christ that I have not run in vain or labored in vain. Yes, and if I a being poured out as a drink offering on the sacrifice and service of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with you all. For the same reason you also be glad and rejoice with me.”

In this passage, Paul clearly outlines how salvation is a journey of faith. It is not a specific event that happens at a specific time. He explains salvation and faith, and how they are related. I hope to shine a light on these things through this post.

Salvation is something that must be worked on. It is a process. There are some parts to happen immediately, but so much happens throughout your life. This is often labeled as “sanctification,” though this isn’t the word Paul uses. Working on our salvation should be so important that we fear and tremble over it. However, it is Jesus who allows this motivation to be set within us. While earthly matters should not cause any excessive attention, our salvation is worthy of this attention.

Similarly, it’s important to behave correctly. If salvation and spiritual things are the roots, then actions and behaviors are the fruits. They take some effort but should partially come as a result of salvation. Behaving correctly and living without complaining or arguing helps us to grow into who God wants us to be. These virtues enable us to be enjoyable for others to be around. This sharply contrasts with most of the world. Bickering is commonplace. Through Jesus, we can combat this, and it will be a light to the rest of the world.

Faith is also important in our walk of salvation. It is seen as believing for things. To the contrary, Paul pairs faith with sacrifice and service. Faith in Jesus should demand sacrifice. Not only that, but we should desire to sacrifice anything for the sake of Jesus. Similarly, service should be implemented in our lives. We should serve others and serve Jesus. These are very important in our faith. They strengthen our faith and our faith strengthens them.
